Judge Hensley grew up a child of divorced parents. As the county’s juvenile office attorney and later in the adoption field, he litigated severe child abuse and neglect cases for over a decade.  As a guardian ad litem, he represented hundreds of children in contested custody cases, child abuse and neglect cases, guardianships, and adoptions.  Consequently, the “best interests of the child” concept has a very personal meaning to him.  Juvenile work has been Judge Hensley’s passion for years, and during his time as an attorney he represented parents adopting over 1,000 children. He jumped at the opportunity to continue that work on the bench, and in 2019 took on additional duties as the Presiding Juvenile Court Judge. Since that time he has witnessed the implementation of the Jasper County CASA program into the juvenile court proceedings.

Judge Hensley was given a unique opportunity during the planning of the new Jasper County Juvenile Justice Center in 2016. The judges had a blank slate to design a courtroom for Juvenile Court proceedings, and Judge Hensley’s intention was to make it an open and inviting place for children, families, and foster parents.  Using the legend of King Arthur’s “Round Table” as a template, his plan moved away from traditional courtrooms designed for dispute and confrontation to a functional courtroom around the collaborative philosophy of juvenile court

ADOPTION DAYS!

Adoption days are unique. As opposed to family conflicts and breakups, a Judge gets to take part in putting a family together. In an attempt to make the adoption days special for the children, parents, and siblings, Judge Hensley makes balloon sculptures which include a menagerie of animals to flowers and bracelets, pirate swords and light sabers.
